Woe to the Vanquished

paul rote Very nice acoustical versions of 3 of their songs. I haven't been inspired to spend $7 for the heavier LP yet. I have a lot in that vein already. But this is awesome for $1. Favorite track: Tsukuyomi (acoustic).

On a winter night Guided by moonlight To the forest shrine Geisha painted white Underneath the moon The flash of her blade She cuts off her hair The moonlight now fades Tsukuyomi The shinobi path Yin and Yang, two halves Make-up just as mask Geisha now wears black Underneath the moon The flash of her blade She cuts off her hair The moonlight now fades Tsukuyomi The blackness of night The moon's perfect white The Yin and the Yang Both one and the same Tsukuyomi

I wrap myself in black This dress dark as night A mourning shawl, though none have died Though when I make my oath The consequence foreseen I've seen the sacred scrolls, I know what it will bring A glimpse into Rome's past, You'll see - we are a people raised by wolves. This great dishonor, a crying shame unto Rome's daughter The scared flame of Vesta's Virgins burns inside of me A kingdom will fall and a people freed. To my father's house I fly With vengeance in my breast A dagger, sleeve-concealed, destined for my chest A glimpse into Rome's past, You'll see - we are a people raised by wolves. This great dishonor, a crying shame unto Rome's daughter The scared flame of Vesta's Virgins burns inside of me A kingdom will fall and a people freed. My solemn word is pledged My gilded knife held high, "By Mars, avenge my death! My oath sealed as I die!"

The storm is raging, tumultuous seas A blood-red sky, and the kraken set free I beg you do not raise anchor this day Your port will be Hades, a watery grave. And the maelstrom churns And the maidens they mourn For the ones who set sail And the sirens they wail And the ships they descend Neptune's Wrath has no end. The days passing by and I wait by the shore Why did you leave me? What was it all for? They tell me that one day you might still return But in my heart I know that you're gone Into the wine-dark sea, I know there's no hope for thee Into the wine-dark sea, I know there's no hope for thee And the maelstrom churns And the maidens they mourn For the ones who set sail And the sirens they wail And the ships they descend Neptune's Wrath has no end.

about

"Woe to the Vanquished" was my immediate idea following Venus Victrix (volume I). It isn't the first time that I distinctly heard in my mind's ear an alternate version of a song as soon as I wrote it, featuring strings, and it's something that I definitely plan to do again (if not in this project, then in others). Tsukuyomi was thus conceived as an acoustic guitar/string version almost at the same time as it was recorded as an electric version. But releasing one song isn't very fun so I selected two more that I felt were appropriate.

Enclosed are three tracks from Volume I, stripped down to their acoustic origins (as that is how I write almost all of my songs). The second two have been fairly popular, but Tsukuyomi has not been - I'm hoping that, for those who enjoyed the album, these versions will present these songs from another perspective, another angle, reveal something more primitive and essential about them, and will therefore let them be heard in a different way.

This album will remain free for this month, at least until I run out of free downloads to hand out (wishful thinking)? Thank you once again to Frederick Tabares for the artwork; thank you also to Carrie Miller on cello, Matt Kjeldsen, Amberly Pierson & Sarah Younkman, as well as Tiffany and the rest of the cult who dildn't appear on this release.
